NordVPN and Surfshark are the two names almost everyone ends up choosing between. Same parent company group, similar apps, very different pricing logic. Here is the honest side-by-side so you can pick once and stop researching.
Quick verdict
- Choose NordVPN if you want the fastest speeds, the most polished apps, and the biggest server network.
- Choose Surfshark if you want the lowest long-term price and unlimited devices on one account.
Speed and servers
NordVPN consistently tops independent speed tests thanks to its NordLynx protocol, with servers in 100+ countries. Surfshark is close behind on WireGuard and covers a similar map; on long-distance connections NordVPN usually keeps a small edge.
Price
- NordVPN: On nordvpn.com (checked 5 October 2026), the 2-year Basic plan is $3.49 per month, billed $94.23 for the first 27 months (24 months + 3 extra months). Higher tiers cost more, and monthly plans are expensive.
- Surfshark: On surfshark.com (checked 5 October 2026), the 2-year Starter plan is $2.49 per month, billed $67.23 for the first 27 months (24 months + 3 extra months). It allows unlimited simultaneous connections — one account can cover the whole family.
Bottom line: Surfshark wins on price and devices; NordVPN wins on raw performance.
Privacy and security
Both are audited, run RAM-only servers, and include a kill switch, ad/malware blocking (Threat Protection on NordVPN; CleanWeb on Surfshark), and multi-hop options.
Streaming and ease of use
Both unblock major streaming services reliably. NordVPN's apps are a bit more refined; Surfshark's are simpler for first-time users and its unlimited-device policy suits big households.
Who should pick which
- Fastest speeds, gaming, big downloads → NordVPN
- Tightest budget, many devices, family sharing → Surfshark
- First VPN ever → either; Surfshark is gentler, NordVPN scales further
Our take
If money is the deciding factor, Surfshark is the best value VPN we have tested the numbers on. If you want the fastest, most complete package and the price difference does not hurt, NordVPN is the one to buy.
