NordVPN Threat Protection 2026: The Renamed "Scam, Phishing & Malware" Shield

NordVPN Threat Protection 2026: renamed Scam, phishing & malware protection — what each tier does, official limits, honest negatives.

NordVPN Threat Protection 2026: The Renamed "Scam, Phishing & Malware" Shield

NordVPN renamed the whole thing, so let's start there: what used to be called "Threat Protection Pro™" is now "Scam, phishing, and malware protection" — marketed as a next-gen antivirus — and the old "Threat Protection"/"Threat Protection Lite" is now "Scam and phishing protection". Same engine under new names, and the difference between the two tiers matters more than the rebrand. See NordVPN's current plans with Threat Protection.

What you actually get

The full version (Scam, phishing, and malware protection) works at the application layer and is always active, regardless of VPN status — no VPN connection needed. Officially it does: real-time in-browser blocking of malicious URLs, ads, and trackers; scam and fraud website alerts; file scanning on download with quarantine (quarantined files are auto-deleted after 30 days, or immediately if you toggle that on); app vulnerability checks (Windows only); a cookie banner hider; email protection (scans URLs in browser-based Gmail/Yahoo); a crypto wallet address checker; hijacked-session alerts; search-result safety indicators; and URL trimming. Detection is partly powered by nexos.ai. It runs on Windows 10 (64-bit)/11 and macOS 12 Monterey+ — sideloaded app only, not available in the Mac App Store version. NordVPN says it is now included in all plans above Basic; Basic keeps only the light version. A standalone version without the VPN exists for Windows and macOS.

The light version (Scam and phishing protection) is DNS-based filtering: it blocks ads, trackers, and unsafe domains at the domain level — but does no file scanning, no quarantine, and no app vulnerability checks. It requires an active VPN connection, with one official nuance: on mobile phones it works without an active VPN connection. It runs on macOS, Windows, Android, iOS, Linux, Android TV / Fire Stick, and the Chrome/Firefox/Edge extensions — Windows and macOS users get both tiers; Android, iOS, Linux, and the extensions get the DNS version only.

NordVPN's official comparison says it plainly: the light tier "blocks websites based on their domain name" while the full tier "scans every website and URL — and blocks them if they're not safe." On claims: AV-TEST certified, and West Coast Labs' anti-malware validation gave it the highest AAA rating with a 99.8% detection rate for high-threat malware "among VPNs with comparable functionality" — NordVPN's own published figures. Privacy-wise, no personal identifiable data is collected; anonymous service data is, with an opt-out.

Honest gotchas

First, NordVPN's own limitation, stated on its blog: this "isn't a full replacement for dedicated antivirus software" — and their comparison table shows "Existing malware removal: ❌". Blocking a download source is not the same as removing a virus already on your device. It's an extra layer of defense, not a replacement. Read that sentence twice before you cancel your antivirus.

Second: the full version is desktop-only (Windows/macOS, sideloaded), and only on plans above Basic. If you're on Basic or on mobile, you get the DNS tier — useful, but not the "next-gen antivirus" in the marketing headline. Match the tier to the plan you actually buy.

Third: we could not verify current promo pricing on nordvpn.com's official pages — the numbers floating around are third-party quotes. The article states it honestly: check pricing at checkout, and verify which plan includes which tier before you pay, since plan names and inclusions change.

Quick answers

Does Threat Protection work without the VPN connected? The full version (Scam, phishing, and malware protection) — yes, it's always active regardless of VPN status. The light DNS version needs an active VPN connection, except on mobile phones.

Can it replace my antivirus? No — NordVPN says so itself. It blocks threats before they land; it does not remove existing malware. Extra layer, not a replacement.

Which plans include the full version? Officially, all plans above Basic — Basic keeps the light version. There's also a standalone option for Windows/macOS without the VPN. Confirm the current tiers at checkout.

Who it is for — and the verdict

Threat Protection fits desktop users who want an always-on second line of defense baked into their VPN — scam and phishing blocking without running a second heavy app. It is not for anyone looking to replace a dedicated antivirus, and mobile users only get the DNS tier.

The honest deal: Basic buys you a great VPN; Complete and up buy you a second line of defense — the renamed full tier is a genuinely capable shield with an honest "not an antivirus" caveat. Get NordVPN with Threat Protection — or compare the plan tiers on the official site.
