What you actually get

italki is a marketplace of independent tutors: you browse live profiles, watch intro videos, and book 1-on-1 video lessons with the teacher you choose. English has the deepest bench — native speakers from the US, UK, Canada, and Australia, plus fluent non-native teachers, across both official tutor types: Professional Teachers (certified, verified credentials) and Community Tutors (native or advanced speakers, conversation-focused). Lessons run through italki Classroom, with some teachers offering Zoom or Skype at their choice.

Because the pool is so large, English is also where italki's filters matter most. You can narrow by specialty: conversational English, IELTS/TOEFL exam prep, business English, English for kids, accent reduction, and interview preparation. Trial lessons are typically ~30 minutes at 30–50% off regular rates — the standard way to test teacher fit before committing.

Platform-wide, italki's 2026 pricing guide says lessons start from $4 (typically $4–25 per session); community tutors usually charge $4–20 per lesson, professional teachers $10–40. There is no subscription, no monthly minimum, and no hidden booking fees for students — you pay per lesson. The platform reports 10M+ learners, 30,000+ teachers, 150+ languages.

Honest gotchas

First: the biggest pool means the widest quality range. A cheap community tutor is conversation with a native speaker, not a structured curriculum — watch the intro video, check lesson counts and student reviews before you pay. For exam prep or business English, filter to Professional Teachers with relevant credentials.

Second: "native speaker" alone is not a teaching credential. The best English tutors on italki combine nativeness with a track record — hundreds or thousands of completed lessons and detailed student reviews. A 5.0 rating from 12 lessons means less than a 4.9 from 3,000.

Third: prices are teacher-set and move. Popular teachers raise rates as calendars fill. If budget matters, compare two or three tutors with cheap trials side by side instead of anchoring on one profile.

Quick answers

Is italki good for IELTS preparation? Yes — exam prep is one of the top teacher specialty filters on the platform, and English has the most IELTS/TOEFL specialists. Look for Professional Teachers who list exam prep explicitly and check their students' score-improvement reviews.

Can I find a business English tutor? Yes. Business English is a filterable specialty; premium tutors in this niche charge toward the higher end of the range. State your industry in the trial lesson so the teacher can tailor materials.

Do I need a subscription? No. italki is pay-per-lesson with no monthly minimum. Optional italki Plus ($5.99/mo or $59.99/yr) adds AI lesson summaries and vocabulary tracking but does not change lesson pricing.

Who it is for — and the verdict

italki English tutors fit learners who want 1-on-1 attention at their own pace: exam candidates, professionals polishing business English, immigrants building conversational confidence, and parents booking for kids. If you want a fixed curriculum with guaranteed progression, a structured course beats a marketplace.

The honest deal: the deepest English tutor pool anywhere online, pay-per-lesson with no lock-in, trials from a few dollars. Filter hard, trial cheap, then commit. Try an English trial lesson on italki — or compare English tutors by specialty and price.
